Drum Role Please.......

LAST POST! Ahhhhhhhhhhh! Can't you hear the excitement! :)

I am very thankful for the experiences that I have had at SLP. I have enjoyed my time with the students, my coteacher, and the other teachers. I have learned many things over the course of these short four weeks. These students are the same age as the students I teach regularly. However, they have extremely varying abilities. It was a challenge to teach such different ranges and am thankful to have a coteacher to group students according to level and teach them that way. It was an experience to say the least, but a good one!

Without my coteacher (who has experience in special education), I doubt I would have had such a great, bump-free experience. THANKS MELISSA! J

Reflection 3

I think that my reading lesson today went great! The children reviewed high frequency words from a short story on flash cards. Then we read the story together and individually several times. The students then traced the high frequency words that they found in the story.

I enjoy teaching reading and I think the students enjoyed it, too.

I still have a hard time teaching two students on the same level and another student who is much lower.

Reflection 2

Today I taught a lesson on adding using a number line. This was a continuation of other addition lessons using multiple strategies. It is important for students to have many strategies they can use to solve math problems, so they can later use the one that works best for them. During the lesson, students were given Expo markers and a dry-erase number line. I always allow students to write on the table if needed. They know that these are special markers and a special table (so mistakes don’t happen at home.) Students were taught then later assessed on adding using a number line by starting at the first number and “hopping” how many ever the next number says.

I think that this lesson went well. The students seemed to be engaged and enjoyed the lesson. The students received tactile, auditory, and visual things to help them.

Although I only have a math group of three students, their ability levels are extremely varied. I am having a tough time deciding how to differentiate enough within a small group. In the perfect world, I could be one-on-one with them all of the time.
Until next time...

Surviving Week 1

Yay! I made it!

While this week started out on a rough note, it has picked up and ended positively. I have really enjoyed working with each of the students and my precious co-teacher, Melissa. The children seem to mesh well together despite their difference in abilities. I was quite surprised by their math and reading skills. Many of them are on grade level or just below, with the exception of a few.

I am looking forward to a new week to start exploring time to the hour and half hour and reading fluency and high frequency sight words.

See ya next week!
